Youth Climbing Teams

Team Mission:  The Front Youth Climbing Teams are designed for climbers’ ages  9-17 years old, wanting to improve on their climbing skills and take their climbing to the next level. We have two structured seasons, a fall season and a spring season. In the fall our team will train and compete in ABS competitions on our road to Regionals and then to Nationals. SCS season is in the spring and is the sport climbing season of USA Climbing. The focus is to help kids learn about and enjoy climbing while becoming a stronger climber. The mission is to have our athletes see that this is not just a seasonal sport but something that can be done year round and that the sport can stay challenging through out there climbing career. The Team emphasizes technique, strength, training, and strategy for significant increases in climbing ability.

Organization: The Salt Lake Front Climbing Team is divided into two separate seasons, Fall (ABS Climbing Season) and Winter SCS Climbing Season). The ABS is a faction of USA Climbing, the governing body over competitive climbing in the United States.

For the past year, we have been conducting team practice with a fairly wide range of ages and abilities, competitive and non-competitive alike. This fall, we have decided to separate the kids into two different teams based upon ability, age and most important, desire to compete in USAC sanctioned events.

  • The Recreational Team will focus on introducing climbers to basic techniques that will help to make them better climbers, while also having fun and getting stronger in a more relaxed environment. The recreational team is geared towards the kids who may or may not have climbed, but want to check it out further in a structured environment. Drills covering foot and hand techniques, instruction in body position and a basic approach to climbing will be what the team is focused on, all while having fun and reaching a higher level of physical fitness. This will be achieved through climbing related drills, open climbing time to work on new routes and a small amount of strength based workouts. Climbers on the recreational team can expect a ratio of 80% climbing and 20% training.
  • The Competitive Team will focus on technique, strength, fitness, competition strategy and in general progressing forward in ability and therefore difficulty of their climbing. This will be achieved through drills, strength workouts and training sessions. Climbers on the competitive team can expect a ratio of 50% climbing and 50% training. The training includes all body weight exercises as it is not healthy for young kids to lift weights. Finger strength and core strength are the most vital component of a climber’s body and that will be the target of many of the workouts. Expect your kids to have tired abs and hands! Other parts of climbing that we will be focusing on will be extensively developing climbers’ abilities to “read” routes. This is incredibly important in competitions especially the Regional and National events that are held in the onsight format.

  • Members of the team will be required to meet certain criteria outlined below:
    • Attend ALL practices, unless otherwise arranged beforehand. It is imperative that the kids attend practice. There is a pattern to workouts and general trends in the workouts to plan peaks of strength around the competition schedule. Missing even one day of practice during the competition season can set a climber back and throw the peak performance time off by days and even weeks.
    • Have their own pair of climbing shoes, purchased off of a list approved by the coaches. We are trying to encourage the competitive team members to climb in shoes that will maximize their abilities by using a high performance shoe.
    • Attend 2 local competitions and plan on attending a regional competition. The local competitions are the training ground for the regional. At the local, the kids will meet members of other teams and make friends that they will later be able to see that season at Regionals, Divisionals and hopefully Nationals. The local competitions are also an excellent place to begin to develop strategy that will be useful in future competitions like the Regional.
