CruX-mas '05 Feedback and Response

Our goal is the make the events at The Front better.  We can only do so if we know what people like and dislike.  Please take the minute to complete the questionnaire.  We know we can't please everyone, but we do want future events to have the broadest appeal to the most people.  You'll see feedback from others at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for your time.

What type of citizens event should we hold in the future?

I want real competition.  The prizes should be given based on the results of the event.  There should be tight control over the scoring.
I like non-competitive events.  I don't take this too seriously. I like that everyone has an equal chance to win prizes, and that its more about fun and the community.
Here's what I like:

What was your impression of the tone for this event?

way too casual    kinda casual     just right    competitive    way too competitive

Swag and raffle:

They're great, it's fun to win stuff

Way too long.  They're OK, just have fewer items
Raffle smaffle, I come to climb, I don't care if you give away anything
Raffle, other feedback

Feedback Response
For the next comp, how about some loud music in the background to get the climbers pumped up? On another note, many of the problems were technically difficult (which is good), could be sent (which is better), but were too reachy for the smaller youth climber.  Overall, every climber I knew had a blast. Thanks so much for organizing these citizen comps. Its great to see kids coming to these comps now, and we'll set some more problems with them in mind in the future.
Raffles are long and boring...plus, online contributors did not have participation in said long and boring raffle I'm not quite sure what you mean by "online contributors", but all competitors should have received two raffle tickets when they got their score cards.  Sorry, if you didn't get one, you should have spoken up during the raffle or asked one of our friendly staff.
Raffles: boring! soccer moms and little league dads: your kids are there to have a good time, after all, it is a FUN comp! It takes a lot of time to tally all the score cards (87 of them) and sort them by category and score, hence the long raffle.  Don't you like free schwag?!  We thought that raffling off 4 pairs of Acopa shoes, 2 pairs of 5.10 shoes, 4 sets of 6 Omega Pacific quickdraws, an Edelweiss crash pad, 14 subscriptions to Urban Climber, plus seemingly countless clothing, chalkbags, water bottles, boxes of chalk, etc, etc, etc, would be a good use of that down time... Do you have an alternative?
Well, again, I love the comps that you guys have, and that you're doing 'em once a month. Tons of fun, the problems are always excellent, and the atmosphere is always great. Two things I'd change... first of all, I still think the categories should be broken up by skill level instead of age brackets. There's just so much variance in climbing ability within the age groups... they were better this time, since the 20-somethings were broken up, but I still think that a little division according to skill would be good. The other thing I'd like to see (and keep in mind, this is totally selfish and self-serving) is more problems in the 800-1000 range. There were lots of good 700 problems, but only like 4 between 800 and 1000 (that I saw, at least). More of those difficulty would be great for me. Finally, as for the raffle.... I LOVE the raffles, I think they're one of the best parts of the comps. I think giving out prizes randomly like that is a GREAT idea, and an excellent use of the downtime while tallying scores. If you don't like the wait time during the raffle, do what I do and just climb easy stuff while waiting. Don't complain about free crap! The problem with skill level divisions is that people place themselves in whichever division they think they should be in.  Often times people are too reserved about their ability and un-intentionally sandbag, or they sandbag intentionally.  Or, what happens when a "beginner" has a really great day and sends like an "intermediate" and we bump him up accordingly.  There are just way to many opportunities even more problems than with age divisions.  Those that are strong should register for the open division.  We really try to minimize the competitive aspect for these citizen comps, so, although there is a lot of variance in the age divisions (basically made up of beginners and intermediates because the experts should be in open), we hope people get the idea that they should be having fun and not worrying about who they beat or who beat them.

Thanks for all the comments and we're glad you had a great time, and as we get a better idea of who comes to these comps, we'll set accordingly; Next time we'll have more problems at that level.  Thanks again!!!

The raffle is awesome! I have been to several comps around the nation, and the schwag given out is by far the best at the Front's comps. If someone is complaining that the raffle is too long, it's because they didn't win anything. Besides, what other type of entertainment could be done to take up the time it takes to add up the results? Damn right!

We could belly dance. Or we could have sang Christmas Carols!

I really like the age divisions, I've entered comps where they have beg/int/adv divisions, I think age is MUCH better.  The raffle is good, do a charity type raffle, buy tickets, support a cause.  Give better prizes to top 3 or something in divisions, raffle of the smaller things to everyone. The problem with giving out larger items to placers, it that then folks have a reason to cheat, and, equally bad, other folks are more sensitive and may think that people are cheating. I'm sure this seems far fetched, but its very true and we've seen both.  For these citizens' comps, we raffle off the big items purposely to keep the competitive aspect low.  The ABS Comp in January will have great prizes for the top finishers.
Nice job with the comp. The setters, as always, put up fun and challenging problems. The Doctors Without Borders event went off nicely as well (special thanks to the caterers!). All in all, it was a fun afternoon and evening.  Thanks! Yeah, the benefit was a great time.  Tim Kemple's slide show was rad, and it was great to be able to watch Mike Call's Big Game again on a big screen.  Plus a full bar and catering by Sage's; all you can eat and drink for the price of a small donation!
I had a great time at the comp. Everything was great. The only thing I would change is that maybe have the younger kids climb at 10 till noon or nine to noon so there's not so many running around. There wasn't enough kids to hold this one early for them, but for ABS Regionals and some other comps around spring, we'll do it that way.  Also, those kids are the future of the climbing industry so feel free to constructively let them know about gym etiquette, both during comps and during regular gym time, as sometimes it needs to be reinforced by others...
Thank you everyone for always providing stuff for us to do!  The raffle was fun, but just a bit too long.
I had a great time and I can't wait to come to another competition! Great.  The ABS Regionals are Jan 28-29.  Then we'll have another citizens' comp in early March.
Tons of fun, Thanks Dustin for talking me into it.
yeah the t-shirt thing only for people who preregistered is crap. my friends and i traveled a great distance to play at you comp and a few of us didn't get a shirt!!! plus the raffle kinda sucked! take lessons from the pocatello pump competition. that is how things should be run. We had extra t-shirts that you could have had, and we gave a bunch out, if you would have asked.  If you ever come back, we've still got some.  Sorry you didn't win anything at the raffle, better luck next time.  How does the Pocatello Pump run things differently? That comp doesn't always go so smooth...  When you give feedback like that you should be more descriptive or leave an email, otherwise its useless.
